Email Newsletter
If you sign up for the Tyler James Cooking newsletter, here’s exactly what happens with your information.
What we collect when you sign up
- Your email address, and your first name if you give it
- When you signed up, which page and form you used, and your IP address. We keep this as a record that you asked to subscribe.
- When you confirmed your subscription, and the IP address you confirmed from
To keep bots out, the signup form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks your browser without a puzzle. Cloudflare’s privacy policy covers that check.
Double opt-in
After you sign up, we send one email asking you to confirm. You’re only added to the list if you click the button in it. If you don’t, you won’t hear from us again. If someone else entered your address, just ignore that email.
What we send
One newsletter a week with recipes and what we’ve been cooking, plus a short welcome email when you join. We don’t sell, rent or share your email address with anyone for their own marketing.
How the emails are delivered
- Our mailing list runs on our own server, not a third-party newsletter service.
- Emails are sent through Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES), which handles delivery.
- When you sign up or unsubscribe, the request first passes through Cloudflare, which holds it only until our server picks it up. These records are deleted from Cloudflare within 7 days (30 days at most if something goes wrong).
- Photos and the logo in our emails are hosted on Cloudflare, and the heading font comes from Google Fonts. Like any image or font on the web, loading them shares your IP address and email app details with those services.
Tracking
We don’t track whether you open our emails. Links in our emails may go through our own link address (links.tylerjamescooking.com) so we can see which recipes readers click on. That can include knowing which subscriber clicked a link. We use it only to decide what to write about, and never share it.
Unsubscribing
Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and most email apps show an unsubscribe button too. Either works within a minute. You can also reply to any email and ask.
Deleting your information
Email [email protected] from the address you subscribed with, and we’ll delete your subscriber record and signup details. Copies held by Cloudflare are deleted automatically within 8 days. Encrypted backups of the mailing list are kept for up to 4 months for disaster recovery, so a deleted record disappears from those as they expire. If you reply to one of our emails, your reply lands in our inbox like any other email.
How long we keep it
While you’re subscribed, we keep your subscriber record. After you unsubscribe, we keep your email address marked as unsubscribed so we never email you again by mistake, unless you ask us to delete it.
Security
Your information is stored on our own server, which isn’t reachable from the internet except for the pages you use to confirm or unsubscribe. Backups are encrypted before they leave the server.
